Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a website?
Absolutely! Even a small, simple website is a valuable asset to you and your business. The Internet is usually the first place people look when trying to find a tradesman, shop, club, or information.
What does ‘hosting’ mean?
Websites are made up of computer files. These files need to be accessed over the Internet by the website visitor's computer. Your website is stored on a special type of computer called a 'server'. A web server is similar to a normal desktop computer, except the hardware and software are tailored to the task of serving up web pages over the Internet as quickly as possible. Web hosting companies usually have row upon row of web servers in large air conditioned rooms. When someone types your website address into their web browser's address bar, or clicks on a link to your website, the server on which your site is stored receives the request and sends the web pages over the Internet to the intended recipients computer.
Of course this is an extremely simplified explanation of what happens.
How much does a website cost?
Not as much as you might think. Our sites start at just £99. Every website is unique and as such we cannot give exact prices here. After our initial discussion, and once we fully understand your requirements we will provide a quotation. We always work with you to provide a price plan to suit your business.
You can pay for your site with a single payment with chargeable updates, a single payment which includes a pre-determined number of updates, or even on a pay-as-you-go basis where there is no up-front cost, just a regular monthly payment which includes development, hosting, and updates to your site.
How long will my website take?
Obviously this will depend upon our current work load and the size and complexity of your site. We would advise on this during our initial discussions
What about a site for mobile phones and tablets?
Mobile devices are becoming more important every day. Many of your website’s visitors will be using either a smart-phone or a tablet computer, and as such it is important that we cater for those visitors. The method used will vary according to a variety of factors, including website size and content, target audience, and your budget. We will discuss the available options with you when planning your website.
How much control will I have over the design of my website?
You have complete control over design of your website. If your business is already in operation then you will probably have a logo and colour scheme which we can carry through onto your website, or we can start the design from scratch. Some requests will not be possible for technical reasons which we will discuss with you, and some requests, while possible, may not be suitable for other reasons such as reducing the usability of the site. We will of course advise you as we design the website.
Who will own my website?
You will own the website completely. You will be free to do as you wish with the files we create.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is the name of your website, ie www.bluebaywebdesign.co.uk is our domain name. Not all domain names are available. Only one person/business can own a particular domain name at any one time. We can check if your desired domain name is available. Your domain name registration is included in the price of your website. Domain name registrations are not permanent and need renewing, usually every one or two years.
Should I choose .co.uk or .com
Ideally your domain name extension should match the country in which you conduct the majority of your business. This helps to show the visitor that you are UK based and it can have an impact on SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). If .com and .co.uk are both available for your desired domain name then you could buy them both. That way if someone enters .com by mistake they can still be directed to your .co.uk website. Go ahead - enter www.bluebaywebdesign.com and see what happens.
I am nowhere near Hertfordshire. Can you create a website for me?
Of course. We have international clients too. If you are local to us then we can meet face-to-face but we can still work together even if you are in Australia.
How do I update the site later on?
Updates to the main website will be performed by us. We offer a variety of flexible, affordable price plans to include updates. If you would like a blog to be incorporated into your site, and this is often a good idea, then you would be able to update that yourself.
What about email? What will my email address be?
Your email address will be email@example.com (or.com). You can have as many email addresses as you like. The part of the email address before the @ symbol can be changed to suit your own personal requirements, for example you could have:
